Boys golf team finishes third

by Marianne Gasaway

The Clear Lake boys golf team (28-6) was in Webster City Thursday to compete in the Lynx Invitational.  The Lions finished third with a score of 360.  Gilbert won the team title with a 324, followed by Webster City with 348.  Nevada was next at 368 and Ballard had 374.  Webster City Purple carded 384.

“We didn’t play very well.  It seemed like our team wasn’t ready to go,” said Coach Eric Perry.  “The back nine of the golf course is pretty tight and I think they were not very confident.  If you’re not confident on every shot, you will have problems.  This tournament is an example as to why our program has been solid for several years.  We don’t shy away from tough courses and most importantly, it makes us better for the postseason.  I am excited to see if this tournament does that again this year.”

Perry said he challenged his team after their poor play on the back nine and was pleased they responded better on the front side.

Easton DeVries came back with a solid 38 on the front side to finish as Clear Lake’s leader with an 84 (46-38).

“Easton has come a long way mentally this year.  He is almost ready to put it together,” said Coach Perry.

Eric Ritter was next for the Lions with a (44-44) 88, followed by Gavin Anderson with a (48-44) 92.  Josh Blaha (51-45) and  Taylor Plagge (50-46) each had 96.  Andrew Crane came in with a (55-43) 98.

Gilbert’s Joey Kerns was medalist with a 78.  Trey Lyons, of Webster City, was runner-up with an 81.
