Cardinal softball team falls to Forest City, 12-9

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura softball team put up a good fight, but it wasn’t enough as they dropped a road game to Forest City, 12-9, on Wednesday, May 24.

The Cards opened the game scoring two runs in the first inning by Jayden Hughes and Jacki Van Oort.  The Indians also scored two in the first inning to knot the score, 2-2.

The second inning was exciting, with Jillian Heitland scoring, followed by a homerun by Mackenzie Van Gerpen that brought in Trinity Smith and Van Oort.  Forest City added some excitement of their own, scoring seven runs.  The score was 9-6 at the end of the second inning.

GHV scored one run in both the fourth and fifth innings. Megan Oetken hit a single that brought in Van Gerpen in the fourth inning.  In the fifth inning,  Trinity Smith hit a triple and scored when Hughes was thrown out at first.  The Cardinals only trailed by one at the bottom of the fifth, 9-8.

The Indians scored three runs in the sixth inning, 12-8.

Nicole Upmeyer hit a single in the seventh inning and advanced her way around the bases to score the last run of the game, 12-9.

Bailey Pitzenberger started for the Cardinals on the mound.  She gave up six hits and nine runs.  Ashley Markla came in and pitched 4.33 innings.  She gave up four hits and allowed three runs.

Van Oort and Heitland were 3/3 at bat and each scored one run.  Van Gerpen and Smith each scored two runs.  Van Gerpen had three RBIs and Hughes had two.
