Cardinals pick up three wins; drop four

It was a busy week for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura baseball team, with seven games in one week.

West Marshall 1, GHV 0

The Cardinals just couldn’t score in a game against West Marshall on Monday, May 30.

GHV pitcher Anthony Sherwood brought everything he had, but just couldn’t close the deal in the final four innings.  The Cardinals lost, 1-0.  Sherwood held West Marshall hitless over four innings, allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out four. Alek Goll pitched three innings and took the loss for the Cardinals.  He walked two, struck out one and gave up four hits and one run.

West Marshall scored its only run on a groundout in the third inning.

Cade Bamrick and Colton Schroeder were the only GHV players to get a hit for the Cards.

Bishop Garrigan 8, GHV 5

It was a little too little, too late for the Cardinals when they traveled to Bishop Garrigan on Wednesday, June 1.

The Cardinals showed a lot of heart as they battled back from a five run deficit to knot the game, 5-5.  The game was decided in the sixth inning when the Golden Bears put up three runs to seal the victory, 8-5.

“Out biggest challenge is trusting our preparation and competing with an edge,” said Coach Steven Schlechter.  “It will develop as these guys continue to grow as a team.”

Three pitchers tried their luck on the mound for the Cardinals.  Payton James started the game and pitched five innings.  He gave up eight hits, five runs and had four strike outs.  Holden Hutcheson lasted one-third of an inning, walked one and allowed three runs.  Nick Joynt also took on pitching duties.  He walked one and struck out one.

Anthony Sherwood and Ryan Meyers had competitive at bats with two hits apiece.  One of Sherwood’s hits was a double and he recorded one RBI.

“We need to clean up some things defensively and have a better approach offensively earlier in the game,” said Schlechter.

GHV 8, Rockford 1

The Cardinals put up a win on their home field on Thursday, June 2, thanks to a fine night on the mound for sophomore Ryan Meyers.

Meyers struck out nine batters and only gave up three hits to give GHV an 8-1 victory.

“He was consistent and effective.  He filled up the strike zone and that’s what makes him a successful pitcher,” said Coach Steven Schlechter.  “Nine strike-outs and only two walks is pretty impressive.  It also helps a pitcher when his defense plays flawless behind him and that’s exactly what we did with zero errors in the field.”

The Cardinals were also competitive at bat.  Seniors Alek Goll, Payton James and Cade Baker all tallied two hits apiece.  Baker drove in two runs, including one coming off a line drive single to center that ended up sparking the sixth run in the fifth inning.  Anthony Sherwood knocked a double that brought in two runs.

“Our line-up was clicking from top to bottom, as seven of our nine starters recorded a hit,” said Schlechter.  “The guys had success at the plate because they were patient and got good pitches to hit.  It was a great team win as we played some good baseball.”

Lake Mills 6, GHV 3

The Cardinals fell to Lake Mills, 6-3, in seven innings on Friday, June 3.

A two-run double in the first inning helped the Bulldogs to take an early 3-0 lead after the first inning.  GHV finally pushed a run over the plate in the bottom of the sixth, 4-1.  A passed ball set off a Cardinal rally and two more runs in the bottom of the seventh and a wild pitch helped GHV close the deficit, but it was too little too late, as Lake Mills held on for the victory.

Anthony Sherwood took the loss.  He started things off and pitched three innings, giving up three hits, four runs and he struck out six batters.  Colton Schroeder finished the last four innings.  He gave up one hit, two runs and struck out two.

The Cardinals garnered four hits, while the Bulldogs only managed three.  Picking up singles for GHV were Cade Bamrick, Sherwood, Cade Baker and Ryley Kozisek.

Bamrick, Sherwood and Baker scored GHV’s three runs.

Humboldt Tournament

The Cardinals competed in a tournament on Saturday, June 4, in Humboldt.  GHV split a pair of games, topping Humboldt, 15-13, and falling to Lincoln Central, 12-2.

“We knew we were going to be short on pitchers for the day and we were down three key players, but we found a way to piece together a win in the first game against Humboldt,” said Coach Steven Schlechter.

Both teams lit up pitchers in the opening game, with GHV collecting 15 hits and Humboldt 13.  The Cardinal’s hits included doubles from Colton Schroeder, Cade Baker and Alek Goll.  Goll was 4/6 at the plate and drove in six RBIs.  Harley Forry connected on a grand slam in the seventh inning bringing home Ryley Kozisek, Cody Kent and Ryan Meyers.  That was followed by Goll’s single that brought home Schroeder to give the Cardinals an 18-10 lead.

Nick Joynt got the win for the Cardinals pitching in relief.  He pitched four innings and allowed seven runs and gave up nine hits.  He struck out two.  Bamrick started the game.  He gave up four hits, six runs and struck-out four.

In the second game of the day, Lincoln Central took a 4-0 lead after the first inning and never relented.  A two-run home run by Nick Joynt in the third inning provided some spark for the Cardinals.  Lincoln Central tacked on another six runs in the fifth to put the game away.

“They just hit the ball better than us.  It was as simple as that,” said Schlechter.  “Our energy and intent wasn’t at its best.  We just didn’t have that edge.”

Alek Goll took the mound in the night cap.  He worked through four innings, giving up eight hits and six runs, three of which were earned.  He also had a good night at the plate, tallying up two hits.

GHV 12, Eagle Grove 1

Nine runs in the first three innings set the stage early for a GHV victory on Monday, June 6, when the team traveled to Eagle Grove.

A fielder’s choice and an error during the first inning and a two-run single by Cade Bamrick got the scoring underway.  Two-run singles by both Cade Baker and Ryan Meyers in the second inning put some runs on the board for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals got three more runs in the fourth innings.  Bamrick hit a single that brought in Ryley Kozisek and Meyers. Anthony Sherwood knocked a single that plated Harley Forry.

GHV’s Dane Whipple shut down Eagle Grove while he was on the mound.  He gave up just one hit, allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out four during his two innings.  Payton James got the win.  He allowed one run over three innings.  He struck out three, had no walks and gave up four hits.

Bamrick led the team with four RBI’s on two singles.
