Cardinals win at home golf meet

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys golf team picked up wins over Eagle Grove and North Iowa on Tuesday, April 26, in the last home meet of the season.  The Cardinals ended with a 166, while Eagle Grove had a 179.  North Iowa didn’t have a final score.

Five GHV golfers shot a 41 or 42 in the meet.  Grady Umbarger and Alek Goll led the way with 41s, while Brandan Bell, Matthew Heinemann and Tyler Obermann all shot 42s.  Jordan Babcock carded a 44.

“We had very balanced scoring,” said Coach Ken Krause.  “It will be very important in the upcoming tournaments to have the whole team shooting competitive scores.”

The Cardinals finished second in a triangular at Forest City on Friday, April 29.  The Indians won the meet with a 177, followed by GHV with 186 and Lake Mills with 224.

“The team was introduced to the par 37 back nine at Forest City,” said Krause.  “Few will argue that this is the most difficult nine holes in North Iowa.”

Umbarger shot an excellent 38 to be the meet’s medalist.  His round included three birdies.

“Grady’s play has been due to long hours of practice.  His teammates are also putting in a great amount of time and effort.  Good things should happen with this attitude,” said Krause.
