Forest City Meet
The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls golf team faced some tough competition at a tournament held in Forest City on Friday, May 10. The Cardinals finished last in a very competitive field of nine. New Hampton won the meet with a 339, followed by Clear Lake with 373. GHV finished with a 457.
“We knew going in that we would be facing some very competitive teams and we really weren’t concerned about how we would finish in the standings,” said Coach Todd Greiman. “With the Regional tournament to be played in Forest City, we saw this as a great opportunity to learn about the course.”
Carlee Frayne placed third among some of the best players in North Iowa, carding (40-40) 80.
“This round will hopefully have her well-prepared to compete in the regional tourney,” said Greiman.
Kelsey Watson was second on the team scoring, (56-67)123. Just one stroke behind her with a (56-68)124 was Rylee Frayne. Rounding out the score was Bailey Johnson, (60-70)130. Jamie Hejlik finished with a (69-88)157.
“Kelsey and Bailey both played their best rounds of the year and with the end of the season rapidly approaching, I’m hoping that everyone will be able to record their best scores,” said Greiman.
Regional Meet
The Class 2A Regional Girls Golf Meet meet was held in Forest City, on Monday, May 13. The GHV girls put together one of their best team scores of the season to place third with a score of 435. Okoboji won the meet with a 343, followed by Crestwood with a 399. Eight teams competed in the meet.
“Coaches always like to see their teams play their best at the end of the season, and that was the story for us,” said Coach Todd Greiman.
The Cardinal’s score of 207 on the front nine was by far the best team score of the year. The 435 total was 22 shots better than what they shot at Bear Creek on Friday.
“Clearly, the experience we gained Friday at Forest City was well worth it,” said Greiman.
Carlee Frayne wasn’t quite up to the performance she put in on Friday, but her effort was good enough to move her on to the Regional Final to be played on Friday, May 17, where she can take advantage of playing on her home course. Frayne was eight strokes behind her score of 80 on Friday, with a (41-46)87.
“Carlee had an off day, but her effort was good enough to move on and at this point that’s all that really matters,” said Greiman.
Freshmen Rylee Frayne and Jailyn Krein had their best efforts of the season. Rylee Frayne finished second on the team with a (52-56)108, while Krein ended with a (56-60)116. Watson rounded out the score with a (58-66)124. Also golfing was Hejlik, (66-69)135 and Johnson, (64-76)140.
“All six players will be back next year, so we’re optimistic about better days ahead,” said Greiman.
