Gary Hugi announces candidacy for Third Ward representative
by Marianne Gasaway
Former Clear Lake City Councilman Gary Hugi has announced his candidacy to represent the city’s Third Ward.
“To be the representative for Ward Three would be an honor and privilege. I feel that I am well qualified since I served on the Planning and Zoning Commission and the City Council in the past years,” said Hugi.
Currently, Hugi is fulfilling a term with the Clear Lake Sanitary District and is president of its Board of Trustees. He has also served on various local and state boards.
“With my past experience, I bring a progressive conservative thought to the future of Ward Three and Clear Lake,” said Hugi. “I hope to see each and every one Nov. 5, 2019 (Election Day) at your voting station.”
Current Third Ward Councilman Jim Boehnke recently announced that he will not be seeking re-election this fall.
Hugi is a retired construction manager who was first elected to the City Council as an at-large representative in 2013. He was defeated in a re-election attempt for the at-large seat in 2017 by Dana Brant. Brant served as the city’s First Ward Council representative from 2012 to 2016, however, due to redistricting he was forced to seek re-election in 2015 in the Third Ward. He was narrowly defeated by the Third Ward incumbent Jim Boehnke.
