GHV girls bow out of Regional play
It was a disappointing loss for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls soccer team as they lost in the first round of Class 1A Regional play to Humboldt on Tuesday, June 2. The Cardinals had beaten the Wildcats two times earlier in the season.
“It is hard to beat a team three times in a season. Sooner or later they are going to get you and it was just unfortunate it had to happen in Regional play,” said Coach Josh Banse.
The Wildcats had a good plan to stop GHV offensively. They put five defensive players to stop Payton Bamrick and Emily Spilman, GHV’s leading scorers. The strategy worked, as Humboldt defeated the Cardinals on penalty kicks, 2-1.
Autumn Weaver scored the Cardinal’s lone goal on an assist from Hannah Lau.
Goalie Sam Betz had nine saves in the match.
Coach Banse is sad to say goodbye to his talented seniors, Mackenzie Haag, Emily Spilman, Sam Betz, Riannan Kadrlik and Tiara Van Gerpen.
“They have been the rocks of this program for the last four years,” said Banse. “The good thing is that we are moving in the right direction with the program. Every year we improve our record and we are starting to compete with great programs.”
