GHV girls soccer team wins first round in Class 2A Regional play

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls soccer team won when it counted. The Cardinals dropped two matches prior to winning the first round of Regionals.
Humboldt 3, GHV 1
GHV fell to Humboldt, 3-1, at home on Thursday, May 16.
Chloe Johnson scored the Cardinal’s lone goal with an assist from Alison Johnson.
Liz Richardson had 71 minutes in goal. She had six saves and two goals scored against her. Morgan Ryerson provided some relief. She played nine minutes in goal and recorded one save and had one goal scored against her.
Hailey Mullins had one shot on goal and one corner kick. Alison Johnson also had one shot in goal.
Mason City 4, GHV 0
Lightning played a part in Thursday night’s game against Mason City. The game was called with eight minutes remaining due to lightning. The Mohawks had the advantage at the time the game was cancelled and they walked away with a 4-0 victory.
Chloe Johnson led the team with three shots and one shot on goal. Also collecting a shot on goal were Alison Johnson, Megan Eastman and Jayden Frank.
Liz Richardson manned the goal for the entire game. She had 10 saves.
GHV 1, Humboldt 0
The Cardinals faced Humboldt again on Tuesday, May 28, in the first round of Class 2A Regional play. The game couldn’t have been closer and came down to a shoot-out in overtime.
GHV connected on three goals in the shootout, while Humboldt only made one of their goal attempts. The Cards won the match, 1-0.
Connecting on goals in the shootout were Jayden Frank, Bretta Carolus and Hailey Mullins.
Liz Richardson was the goal keeper for the entire game and overtime. In regulation play she had eight saves. In overtime she had two saves and one goal scored against her in the shootout.
During the game, Alison Johnson had two shots on goal and Macey Spilman had one shot on goal. Johnson also had a shot on goal during overtime.
