GHV girls top Clear Lake in Regional action

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls soccer team made school history last week with their first ever Regional win.  Unfortunately, the season ended in the second game for the Cardinals.

GHV 1, Clear Lake 0

GHV faced Clear Lake on Tuesday, May 31, to open Regional play.  The Cardinals’ Payton Bamrick connected on a goal deep in the first half.  That was all it took, as one goal was enough to top the Lions.

“We had a game plan to occupy the middle and we executed it to perfection,” said GHV Coach Josh Banse.  “It is always nice to see the girls dig deep for a victory.”

“I felt Garner out-played us in the first half, which is something we’ve struggled with all season,” said Clear Lake Coach Steve Faber.  “We played much better in the second half, just not enough to overcome the one point advantage they gained in the first half.”

Clear Lake’s goalie, Ellie Biebesheimer, had a work out, collecting 17 saves, while GHV’s goalie, Morgan Westendorf, had nine saves.

Clear Lake’s Erin O’Tool led the Lion offense with four shots on goal, while Milo Dugan had two.  Kathleen Moore and Jessica Faber each had one shot on goal.

For GHV, Autumn Weaver led the way with seven shots on goal, while Bamrick had two and Jackie Van Oort and Hannah Lau had one apiece.

The loss ended the season for Clear Lake, which finished with a 5-6 record.

“The team and myself have all learned a lot this season and looking forward we will implement these lessons,” said Faber.

Hudson 4, GHV 0

The Cardinals faced a tough opponent on Friday night, June 3, when they met Hudson in the second round of Regionals.  Hudson outscored GHV, 4-0, to earn the victory and the chance to move on in post-season play.

“We played well enough against Hudson, they are just a good team,” said Coach Josh Banse.

Goalie Morgan Westendorf had five saves in the match.

Payton Bamrick had two shots on goal and Payton Echelberger had one.

GHV says good-bye to five seniors, Autumn Weaver, Bamrick, Hannah Sokol, Sydney Childress and Ashlee Diaz.

“These five girls have accumulated thousands of minutes on the pitch and will be hard to replace,” said Banse.  “The good thing is that we are moving in the right direction and improving every year.  We had a good season and fought hard.”
