GHV volleyball team picks up first win of season
The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura volleyball team split a pair of games last week. The Cardinals fell to Forest City, but came back and picked up their first win of the season against West Hancock.
Forest City 3, GHV 0
The Cardinals hosted Forest City on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
The Indians dominated the first match on their way to an easy 25-8 score.
The Cardinals made adjustments to their game and competed in games two and three. They only fell by two points in the second match, 25-23, and dropped the final match by three, 25-22.
“As a team we need to become more confident at the end of matches and continue the aggressive play until point 25,” said Head Coach Kelsey Steffens.
Hannah Lau led the team at the net, with nine kills and two blocked shots. She also contributed five digs.
Carlie Knutson and Mackenzie Van Gerpen had six kills apiece and Van Gerpen also had a block. Katie Rasmuson had three kills and Taylor Gerdes recorded two.
Van Gerpen led the defense with eight digs. Bailee France led the team in assists with 12. Sydney Childress had eight assists.
Knutson led the team at the service line, with seven points on serve and one ace.
GHV 3, West Hancock 1
It was a good night on the road for the Cardinals, when they picked up their first win of the season at West Hancock on Thursday, Sept. 3.
“It’s always great to get the first win of the season,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens. “We stepped up our net play in the last two games and that helped provide us with a strong offense.”
The Cardinals started a little slow and dropped the first set, 25-22. GHV dominated the second set, 25-11. The next two sets also went to the Cardinals, 25-19 and 25-13.
“We need to come out with the intensity that we finished with in the fourth set,” said Steffens.
Mackenzie Van Gerpen had a good game with 11 kills, one block and 10 digs. She also had 10 points on serve and three aces.
Hannah Lau also had a good game with nine kills, 3.5 blocks, eight digs and one ace serve.
Carlie Knutson led the team at the service line with 14 points on serve and two aces. She also had six kills and six digs.
Sydney Childress led the team in assists with 20.
Jacki Van Oort had 10 points on serve with four aces.
