Lions top Algona and IF-A in triangular
The Clear Lake boys golf team easily outdistanced North Central Conference rivals Algona and Iowa Falls-Alden in a triangular played Friday, April 29, at Highland Golf Club in Iowa Falls. The Lions picked up the win with a 159. Algona carded a 190 and IF-A finished with 193.
Clear Lake’s Thomas Storbeck was medalist with a round of 38. Teammate Alex Snelling was runner-up with a 39.
“Thomas remained steady. His work ethic is really taking him over the top. He was driving the ball very good,” said Coach Eric Perry. “Alex played a smart round. He is starting to figure this game out and play smart. Alex can turn a bogey into a birdie in the next hole. Alex is the missing key to our success. When he starts playing consistent we will make a run.”
Other counting scores for the Lions were turned in by Kyle Calaguas with 40 and Jackson Hamlin with a 42.
“Jackson Hamlin scored for the first time,” added Coach Perry. “Jackson turned out to be a very important part of our team. He is gaining confidence every time out. Look forward to him improving the rest of the year.”
Also competing was Evan Krause, who finished with a 43, and Tate Storbeck with a 44.
Junior varsity
The Lion junior varsity also topped the competition. The Lion JV turned in a score of 199, led by Dalton Humburg and Ben Blaha, each with rounds of 48. Carter Backhaus had a 51 and Will Cooney had 52. Also golfing for the Lions was Tre Geitzenhauer, with a 54, and Seth TenEyke, with 55.
The IFA junior varsity edged Algona’s JV, 223 to 224.
