Losses add up to a tough week for the GHV Cardinals

by Michelle Watson

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura baseball team continues to struggle.  The team is looking to end a 10-game losing streak, unfortunately, this wasn’t the week, as the Cards dropped four more games.

Nashua-Plainfield 11, GHV 5

Nashua-Plainfield took control of the game early and didn’t relent, beating GHV 11-5  on Monday, June 10.

The Huskies’ bats came ready to swing.  They jumped to an early 5-0 lead in the first two innings.

The Cardinals got rolling in the third inning.  Landon Dalbeck hit a double line-drive to right field, bringing in Jack Ermer, and moving Jared Shaw to third base.  Shaw was able to score on a wild pitch, 5-2.  GHV sat down the first two batters.  Jordan Upmeyer struck out the first batter and the Adryen Fausett made the out on a fly ball to left field.  Upmeyer made the final out following a ground ball.

The Cardinals again went to work in the fourth inning. With two outs, Ermer smacked a double to left field, scoring Brody Boehnke and Fausett.  The double pulled GHV to within one run, 5-4.

Nashua-Plainfield took over from that point, scoring four runs in the fourth and one run in both the fifth and sixth innings.

GHV had one more chance in the seventh inning.  Dalbeck managed one more run on an error by the catcher to end the game, 11-5.

Upmeyer took the loss for the Cardinals.  He allowed 11 hits and nine runs over three and two-thirds innings.  He struck out six.  Dalton Graff and Dakota Burress came in as relief pitchers.  Graff pitched two innings, giving up two hits, two runs, while striking out two.

The Cardinals tallied six hits, compared to the Huskies’ 13.  Ermer led the team with three hits, two being doubles and two RBIs.  He also stole three bases.  Dalbeck had two hits, one being a double and he had one RBI.

Rockford 4, GHV 3

Despite out hitting Rockford, GHV just couldn’t get runners across the plate, falling 4-3 to Rockford on Wednesday, June 12.

The Cards got on the board first when Landon Dalbeck singled on a fly ball to left field, allowing Jared Shaw to score.  Rockford had a strong second inning, scoring three runs to take a 3-1 lead.

GHV battled back in the third inning when Brody Boehnke hit a hard ground ball and tallied two RBIs with Dalbeck and Dalton Graff to knot the game, 3-3.  Rockford hit a homer in the bottom of the fourth inning that sealed the win.

Jack Ermer took the loss on the mound.  He pitched six innings, allowing four runs on five hits and he sat down eight batters.

Newman 10, GHV 0

The Cardinals met a tough competitor when they faced Newman Catholic on Thursday, June 13.  The Knights blanked GHV, 10-0, in five innings.

The Cards struggled putting runs on the board and couldn’t contain Newman defensively.

GHV could only manage two hits against Newman’s pitcher.  Both hits were doubles by Brody Boehnke and Sam Childress.

Dalton Graff took the loss.  He allowed eight hits and 10 runs over four and two-thirds innings.  He struck out two batters.

Lake Mills 12, GHV 0

The Cardinals had a hard time collecting a hit against a tough Lake Mills pitcher and were shut-out 12-0 in a home game on Friday, June 14.
