Snelling captures NCC crown; DeLong runner-up

Clear Lake’s Emily Snelling captured another North Central Conference golf crown Monday at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

Snelling, who only returned to the links a week earlier after rehabilitating from surgery on a torn ACL, fired a 77 to take medalist honors.  Teammate Ashley DeLong, a sophomore, was runner-up with an 82.  Clear Lake’s Erin Carew finished in ninth place with a 95 and Jordyn Barragy carded a 98.   Mattie Krause and Grace Hartnett recorded scores of 99 and 114 respectively.

Humboldt edged the Lions to win the team title, 353-354.

“Our short game has been a little inconsistent this season, but today it was our strength and it’s what helped us shoot our season low 354,” said Clear Lake Coach Adam Brinkman.  “Humboldt is a very good team, and to only lose by one stroke proves that we can compete with some of the best teams in state,”

The remainder of the field included: St. Edmonds (398), Clarion-Goldfield (404), Algona (418), Hampton Dumont (433), Webster City (486) and Iowa Falls (508).

“Only losing by a single stroke is a frustrating though.  Any of the girls can say they lost a stroke here or there that they should have made.  It’s a good learning experience for them, it  shows that we need to take every stroke serious because it can come down to that one stroke,” added Brinkman.
