Lions earn post season recognition

As expected, Class 3A District 3 champion Clear Lake led the balloting for All-District players.  The Lions placed six players on the First Team All-District offense and six on the defense.

The Lion defense is represented by Chandler Diercks, defensive back; Zach Zwiefel, defensive line; Pete Swenson, inside linebacker; Tim Franken, outside linebacker/defensive end; Connor Nosbisch, outside linebacker/defensive end; and 

Chase Lester, utility.

The Clear Lake High School Cheerleading squad placed second at the Iowa State High School Cheerleading Championships.  Members of the 

CL X-C team looking to be competitive in NCC meet

The Clear Lake cross country teams had the chance to preview the course for the North Central Conference meet, racing at the Eagle Grove Invitational Tuesday, Oct. 8.  Based on their performances, the Lions should be very competitive at the NCC meet next week.

Clear Lake’s varsity boys team finished four in the nine-team field; the girls were ninth.

A week of ups and downs

 

The Clear Lake girls had an up and down week on the volleyball court.

The Lions opened the week with a strong North Central Conference win at Hampton-Dumont.  They downed the Bulldogs 25-16, 25-17, 25-19.

Mohawks stumble on Lion’s Field

 

Effective adjustments, probably combined with an impassioned halftime speech, lifted Clear Lake to a 41-20 victory over Mason City Friday night in the season opener for both teams.  

Lions open post-season with a win over Charles City

 

Severe thunderstorms caused a delay in the Sub-State final scheduled Monday night between number two ranked (3A) Clear Lake and sixth ranked Waverly-Shell Rock.  The game was rescheduled for Tuesday night, July 23.  (Results were not available at press time).  The

Clear Lake softball team returns favor and beats Algona

 

The Clear Lake softball team dropped three games, then finished the week with a well played game which gave the Lions a win over Algona just one night after they were thumped by the same team.

Eagle Grove 3, CL 2

Trailing 3-1 after four innings, the Lions came roaring back and scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning in a conference battle played June 21 at Eagle Grove.  The Eagles stiffened their defense and held on for the 3-2 win.

G-H/V softball team picks up first win of the season

 

The week started off rough for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura softball team, but it ended on a high note.  The Cardinals dropped five games before picking up a win.  The Cardinals record now stands at 1-11.

“We had a busy week of games and showed improvement throughout,” said Coach Christina Weiser.  “We are getting great offensive production from the top of our batting order and continue to make 

progress in all aspects of the game.”

CL boys soccer team falls in Sub-State

 

Third-ranked (Class 2A) Hudson ended the season for the Clear Lake boys in Sub-State soccer action Wednesday, May 22.

Hudson, playing on its home field, defeated the Lions 2-1 in the Sub-State semi-final.

The Pirates advanced to face No. 16 Waverly-Shell Rock Saturday and were defeated by the Go-Hawks,

 2-0.  W-SR will play in the State tournament starting May 30 at Cowie State Park in Des Moines.

Further details of the Clear Lake match with Hudson were not available at press time.

Cardinals face powerhouse programs at Sectional golf

This was the first year the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys golf team competed as a 3A team in Sectional competition and the Cardinals met up with some powerhouse programs, such as Decorah, Clear Lake 

and Waverly-Shell Rock.  The meet was held on Friday, May 10, in Decorah.

“As a team, we represented ourselves well with a fourth place finish in the eight-team field,” said Coach Ken Krause.  “Especially being a young squad with no seniors.”
