The National Transportation Safety Board has agreed to consider reopening an investigation into what caused a 1959 Iowa plane crash that killed musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson and pilot Roger Peterson. 

CL man sentenced to 55 years for crime spree

A Clear Lake man was sentenced to 55 years in prison after a conviction of arson, drug possession and thefts from automatic teller machines in Clear Lake.

Michael Dean Wilson, 25, pleaded guilty to two counts of third-degree burglary as a habitual offender, one count of second-degree arson,

 one count of second-degree criminal mischief as a habitual offender, and one count of third offense possession of methamphetamine as a habitual offender.

Declining school enrollment will challenge boards

Budgeting is always a tough task, but for local school leaders the task is even more daunting in the wake of the district’s largest decline in enrollment in the past five years.

The Clear Lake School District has reported its 2014-15 certified enrollment as 1,209.5.  Enrollment for 2013-14 was 1,236.7, meaning a loss of just over 27 students.  The 2.2 percent drop will amount to a loss of approximately $174,000 in state funding next school year (based on current funding levels).
