Volleyball team faces powerful competition

 

The Clear Lake volleyball team took on a pair of North Iowa powers in a Thursday, Sept. 6, triangular.  Host Charles City topped the Lions 25-10, 25-9 and Mason City posted 25-9, 25-22.  The losses put the Lions at 6-3 in match play.

“Charles City is ranked number two in the state in Class 4A . They are a very well coached team and deserve that high ranking,” said Clear Lake Coach Scott Swenson.  “MCHS has been playing a lot of the best 5A

Both teams claim top honors for G-H/V cross country

 

It was a very successful day for both the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura/West Hancock boys and girls cross country teams.  Both teams brought home championships from the Belmond-Klemme meet held Tuesday, Sept. 4.

“I thought our runners have done a good job with the extreme heat conditions that we have been running in lately,” said Coach Jeff Short.  “I am looking forward to seeing our times when the conditions get back in the 

Fire empties Clear Lake apartment building

The Clear Lake Fire Department responded to a fire in an eight-unit apartment building early Tuesday morning in Clear Lake. 

Residents at 2102 14th Ave. N. were evacuated as firefighters worked to extinguish an electrical fire in the ceiling of the apartment occupied by Trent Schmitt.  The report of the fire came into the Clear Lake dispatch at 4:03 a.m. Tuesday. There were no injuries. 

The apartment building is owned by Daniel Jackson, of Clear Lake.

City Council approves radio upgrade for police; new vehicle for K-9 officer

 

The Clear Lake City Council has given its approval to proceeding with plans for an upgrade of the police department’s radio system, as well as a new emergency back-up generator for City Hall.

City Administrator Scott Flory reviewed the proposed Public Safety Radio Communications System Upgrade and stated that several years ago, the FCC ordered all public safety agencies to upgrade their radio systems to 12.5 kHz technology and that public agencies were to convert to a narrower band by Jan. 1, 2013.  Chief Peterson

At age 99, this CLHS cheerleader has still got pep

At age 99, Jean Knutson has still got plenty of pep.  And if she could, she says she’d love to be back running down the hallway at Clear Lake High School this week.

Homecoming activities planned this week at CLHS

Clear Lake High School students will celebrate Homecoming with a variety of dress up days this week.  

Monday was Western Day at the school and Tuesday, Sept. 11, was marked as American Day.  Today, Wednesday will be Nerd Day, followed by Pajama Day on Thursday and Spirit Day on Friday.  

Glenn Fergason

 

Glenn V. Fergason, 93, of Clear Lake, Iowa, passed away Friday, Aug. 31, 2012 at Hospice of North Iowa.  Most recently, Glenn resided at Homestead Assisted Living, Mason City, Iowa. 

A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North 4th Street, Clear Lake, with Reverend Dean Hess of Zion Lutheran Church in 

June Johnson

 

June Johnson, 87, of Clear Lake, died peacefully at Ebenezer Care Center, Burnsville, Minn., on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012 following a short fight with lymphoma.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012 at the First Congregational Church, Clear Lake, with Rev. Brad Thornton officiating.  Visitation with family will begin at  10 a.m. at the church.  Inurnment 

Derwood Wells

 

 Derwood E. Wells, 81, of Clear Lake, passed away Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center- North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa, surrounded by his family.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura, Iowa, with the Rev. Daird Korth officiating.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.
