Clear Lake boys soccer season comes to a close

The Clear Lake Lions’ soccer season came to an end on Monday, May 22, during the first round of Regional competition.  The Lions traveled to Garner-Hayfield-Ventura on a twice rain delayed evening and was downed, 6-2.

“When I found out that we had to play Clear Lake in the first round again, I was very nervous,” said GHV Coach Eric Williams.  “I knew every year the Lions will be well coached and have a strong team.”

Freshman Sara Faber recorded the first hat trick of her high school career and helped the Clear Lake girls to a 7-2 victory over Webster City May 22.  Faber scored three times while making five shots on goal.

Tough week for GHV girls soccer team

It was a tough week for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls soccer team.  The Cardinals suffered two losses, one to Iowa Falls-Alden and one to Gilbert.

Iowa Falls-Alden 6, GHV 0

The Cards faced a good team when they played Iowa Falls-Alden on Tuesday, May 23.  GHV fell to the Cadets early in the season, 2-0.

Forest City 10, GHV 0

A deadly third inning doomed the Cardinals to a 10-0 loss to Forest City on Wednesday, May 24.

The Indians scored eight runs in the third inning to secure the victory.

Forest City’s pitcher was not letting GHV get anything going.  He surrendered zero runs, zero hits and struck out seven.

The defending State Champion Clear Lake Lions didn’t get off to the start they were hoping for, but Coach Seth Thompson said he expects his team to be better in all facets of the game when they are at full strength.

Newman Catholic broke open a close game through three innings with the help of Lion errors and went on to post a 15-3 victory in the opening game of the Charles City tournament.  The game was played Tuesday, May 23, in Clear Lake.

Cardinal softball team falls to Forest City, 12-9

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura softball team put up a good fight, but it wasn’t enough as they dropped a road game to Forest City, 12-9, on Wednesday, May 24.

The Cards opened the game scoring two runs in the first inning by Jayden Hughes and Jacki Van Oort.  The Indians also scored two in the first inning to knot the score, 2-2.
