Shaw, Baker win championships at conference wrestling

GHV wrestlers earned two Top of Iowa Conference wrestling crowns in a very competitive tournament held Saturday in Forest City.

Osage won the conference meet with 228 points, followed by Lake Mills with 185.5.   Central Springs was third with 175, followed by Belmond-Klemme with 143.5 and St. Ansgar with 138.5.  Newman Catholic was sixth with 125 points, North Butler had 122 and GHV was next with 120.5.  The rest of the field included: Nashua-Plainfield (114), Forest City (108), Rockford (91), West Hancock (88.5), Eagle Grove (68), West Fork (67), N-K (17) and North Union (3).

Only Osage, Lake Mills, GHV and B-K produced multiple champions with two apiece.

GHV’s Connor Shaw earned his title at 170.  After a first round bye, Shaw won by fall in the second and third rounds, then defeated Zach Ryg, go Central Springs, 4-2 in the final.

Cade Baker was the champion at 182-pounds.  He also had a first round bye, then won in the quarterfinal by decision and semifinal by fall.  The finals featured Baker and another wrestler with only two losses on the season, Hunter Hagen, of West Hancock.  Baker won, 12-10.

Other top place winners for the Cardinals included Jace Pringnitz, third at 120-pounds, and Chase Ulven, fifth at 285.

The Cardinals prepared for the conference meet with a triangular at home.  They posted wins over Northwood-Kennett, West Fork and West Union.  Results appear below:
