The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys placed second in two meets last week, moving their record to 9-5.
On Monday, April 18, the team competed at the Gruis Golf Course. The Cardinals placed second with 182-points, behind Algona who won with a 167-points. Lake Mills scored 228 and North Iowa ended with 242.
All six Cardinal golfers were within seven strokes of each other. Grady Umbarger led the way with a 43, followed by Matthew Heinemann with a 44. Jake Folkers shot a 47, while Brandan Bell and Jordan Babcock both shot 48s.
“We gained valuable experience by playing new and different courses,” said Coach Ken Krause.
On Friday, April 22, the team competed in a triangular on a tricky par 37 course at the Belmond Country Club. The Cardinals finished in the middle of the pack with a 171. Bishop Garrigan won the meet with a 169. Belmond-Klemme ended with a 239.
“This was the first time any of our players had seen the course,” said Krause.
Umbarger shot a one-over par 38 to be the meet’s medalist.
Heinemann’s 43 included two doubles, while Babcock’s 44 had a nine on the card.
“All three of these players had excellent rounds,” said Krause. “Tyler Oberman, Brandon Bell and Todd Finley are becoming more solid all the time. When you add Alex Goll and Jake Folkerts to the mix, it will be competitive to see who will play in the upcoming tournaments.
On Saturday, April 23, the team competed in a triangular at Ridge Stone Golf Course. Hampton-Dumont won the meet with 173 points, followed by West Fork, 181, and GHV carded a 184.
Finley and Umbarger both fired 44 to lead the scoring for the Cards. Heinemann and Obermann followed with 48s. Bell and Babcock rounded out the scoring with a 49 and a 52 respectively.
