Ups and downs for the GHV girls golf team
It was a busy week for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls golf team, as they competed in three meets.
On Monday, April 18, the team was at North Iowa, where they struggled to record some decent scores.
“This was our worst performance as a team in quite a while. The weather was not a factor and the course was not that difficult. It just seemed that all of the girls managed to find trouble somewhere,” said Coach Todd Greiman.
Kyleigh Slaichert and Bailee Frayne led the team with scores of 50 and 51. Paige Penning shot a 59 and Kayla Leerar ended with a 64. Rachel Enright shot a 71.
“This is one of those times when you just walk away, put it behind you and move forward,” said Greiman.
The Cardinals had a much better outing on Tuesday, April 19, at West Fork. GHV won the meet by 17 strokes. The Cards recorded a 211, followed by Hampton-Dumont with a 228 and West Fork who ended with a 285.
Frayne led the team with a 43, followed by Slaichert, who shot a 46. Rounding out the score was Penning with a 59 and Leerar with a 63. Enright shot a 66.
“We had a much better effort from Bailee and Kyleigh, but if we’re going to be a competitive team we need a couple more scores in the mid to low 50s. We’re just not there yet, but I believe we do have the ability to improve before tournaments roll around,” said Greiman.
GHV had another good outing, this time at Belmond on Friday, April 22. The Cardinals won the meet with 202 points. Bishop Garrigan was second with a 240, followed by Belmond-Klemme with a 268.
The 202 was the Cardinal’s lowest team total of the season. “Hopefully we’re on the way to even more improvement,” said Greiman.
Frayne nabbed medalist honors with a 41. Slaichert wasn’t far behind with a 44. Penning shot 57, followed by Enright and Leerar with 60s.
“Bailee and Kyleigh were their consistent selves and Paige came in right where she’s been all year and Kayla and Rachel both played better,” said Greiman.
