The Clear Lake Lions improved to 2-0 Thursday with a 10-2 victory over Iowa Falls-Alden. The game had originally been scheduled for Wednesday at home, however weather delayed the game by a day and changed the site to Iowa Falls.
Both teams started out slow in the first inning, but the Lions scored four runs in the second inning, added singles in the fourth and fifth, then exploded for four more in the sixth.
The Lions were led at the plate by Julia Merfeld and Kaylee Nosbisch, each going three-for-five. Chelsey Holck also had a big day, going three-for four with two RBIs.
“Chelsey also had a big day defensively, scooping up many balls,” said Coach Austin Peterson about his first baseman.
Bella Parker had a pair of hits, including a double and had an RBI. Macy Mixdorf smacked a triple as one of her two hits in the game. She also had an RBI.
Clear Lake’s three freshmen pitchers teamed up again.
Ashlyn Fread earned the win. She pitched two innings, giving up one run and striking out two. Rachel Thornton came in and pitched three innings and struck out three. Alivia Hauge closed out the ballgame. She threw the final two innings, striking out three and not giving up a run.
“We have played to really solid games, but the season is long so we need to stay focused and keep working on improving. Really like the chemistry of this team.”
The Lions will have a tough week, as they begin North Central Conference play against Webster City Monday and Algona Wednesday on the road. In between, they take on Central Spring and host Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Thursday, June 6. Monday the team is back in NCC action at Clarion and Tuesday, June 11, they are at county-rival Mason City.
