CL grapplers compete at The Battle of Waterloo

The Battle at Waterloo did just what Coach Doug Munn was hoping.  It gave his wrestlers exposure to some of the toughest competition in the state.  The event capped a wild week of action— nine duals in five days, all on the road— before the holiday break.

“We found out a lot about our wrestlers this week.  Several kids turned the corner over that stretch and now realize what it takes to compete at the varsity level,” said Munn.  “With nearly half the team seeing varsity action for the first time, they responded incredibly well.  The Battle of Waterloo is arguably one of the toughest dual tournaments in the state, and we battled with a lot of heart.”

Senior Conner Morey had an outstanding tournament, finishing with a 6-0 record at 132-pounds and being named to the All-Tournament team.

“Connor continues to be one of our senior leaders on the team and we will expect even more from him after the holiday break,” said the coach.

  Roman Gabrielson (113) and Alex Flickenger (285) got a taste of victory for the Lions during key duals and showed great improvement over the weekend, added Munn.

Thomas Gansen (160), Dylan Kruckenberg (195) and Max Currier (120) each recorded five wins at Waterloo.  Conner O’Tool (170) earned four wins.

  “This break has come at a good time,” said Coach Munn.  “It will give a chance to regroup, heal up from a few bumps and bruises and gear up for the stretch run.”

The Lions are back in action Saturday, Jan. 4, at the Hampton Duals.
