Adjustments pay off for GHV boys soccer team

Getting the right players in the right positions has been a challenge for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys throughout the season, but they may have found the formula as they defeated CAL, 10-2, on Friday, May 5.

“I was extremely impressed with our young men, because we have moved lots of them to new positions.  Some of them played positions that they have never played before, and they really excelled at them,” said Coach Eric Williams.  “We have been looking at our team hoping to find a little better team play, trying to get the right guys in the right positions.”

As expected, the Cardinals started a bit slow, as the players adjusted to new positions, but once they felt comfortable in their new roles, things started happening.

In the second half, the Cardinals scored six goals in 12 minutes.  A lot of credit goes to Connor Burke, who scored six goals for the Cardinals, a GHV record for goals scored in a match. Every time Burke scores the all-time scoring record is increased.

Nick Joynt stepped in at goalie and really excelled.  He only had four saves on the night, but that’s because the GHV defense played so well and the midfield controlled the ball.

In addition to Burke’s six goals, he also had eight shots on goal.  Scoring a goal apiece were Brady Hess, Ryan Meyers, Seth Miller and Matthew Barickman.

Jonah Albertson and Myers led the team in assists with two each.  Johnathan O’Connor and Brandon Feuring had one assist apiece.

Meyers, O’Connor and Colton Schroeder all had two shots on goal.

“All in all, I truly believe that we have turned a corner, and now have the confidence to play great soccer,” said Williams.
