Cardinal girls finish in the middle of the pack at Eagle Grove Meet
The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls track team competed in Eagle Grove on Thursday April 6. The Cardinals finished in the middle of the nine-team meet with 49.4 points. Algona won the meet with 154.75 points and Bishop Garrigan was second with 81 points.
“It was great to finally have a track meet,” said Coach Dyan Childress. “The girls have been practicing hard, but with cold weather and a lot of inside practices, it felt good to get outside on the track.”
Rebekah Larson was the lone Cardinal to finish with a first place finish. Larson claimed the top time in the 3000 meter run in 13.03.85.
Jillian Heitland finished the 400 meter hurdles in 76.94 for a second place finish.
GHV had three third place finishes. Rachel Hejlik was third in the shot put with a toss of 32’05.5”. Hannah Whelan ran the 1500 meter run in 6.00.91 and Jayden Hughes ran the 100 meter dash in 13.42.
Emma Whelan and Heitland tied for fourth place in the high jump with a leap of 4.6”.
Heitland and Mara Anderson finished in fifth and sixth place respectively in the 100 meter hurdles. Heitland clocked a 17.83, while Anderson ran the race in 18.12.
“With our returning talent, combined with our new talent, it was fun to see what we can do. We needed to get some times to know where we are and where we need to go from here,” said Childess.
