Cardinals drop three games

It was a week the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura baseball team wished had gone differently. The Cardinals dropped three games played last week.
Newman 9, GHV 5
Newman 6, GHV 0
The number one team in Class 1A, Newman Catholic, swept GHV in a double header played on Monday, June 22.
Newman pitcher Evan Paulus performed solidly on the mound in game one, striking out seven and walking three in a 9-5 Knight victory. Ryan Meyers took the loss for the Cardinals. He pitched all six innings, giving up 10 hits and he walked seven.
Collecting one hit apiece for the Cardinals was Connor Burke, Harley Forry, Payton James and Alek Goll. James recorded two RBIs for the team.
Forry and Chase Theobald each scored two runs for GHV and Burke scored one.
Colton Schroeder pitched the second game for the Cardinals and took the loss. He struck out four, walked five and gave up seven hits in the 6-0 shut-out.
Forry was the only GHV player to connect on a hit.
North Union 4, GHV 0
It was another tough outing for the Cardinals when they traveled to North Union on Wednesday, June 24, where they were handed a 4-0 loss.
Burke did a fine job at the plate for GHV, collecting two hits, one being a double. Goll also collected a hit, but the Cardinals were unable to get anyone across the plate.
James did the pitching for the evening. He struck out four, walked three and gave up five hits.
Bishop Garrigan 14, GHV 0
It was more of the same on Friday, June 26, when the Cardinals hosted Bishop Garrigan. The Golden Bears had no trouble downing GHV, 14-0
B-G pitcher Zach Boelter was too much for the Cardinal batters. He threw seven strikes and only allowed one hit in the shut-out. Meyers was the only GHV player to get a hit in the game.
Pitching duties for the Cardinals was split between Goll, Holden Hutcheson and Ryley Kozisek. Goll took the loss, pitching a third of an inning. He gave up three hits and four runs. Hutcheson pitched a majority of the game, four innings. He gave up six hits and nine runs. Kozisek gave up two hits and one run.
The week dropped the Cardinals record to 5-15 overall. The team travels to Eagle Grove on Wednesday, July 1. The JV team takes the field at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity at 7:30 p.m.
