Cardinals go 1-2 in busy week
The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura baseball team hit some snags last week. The Cardinals went 1-2 on the week, moving their record to 5-10 overall.
Algona 6, GHV 1
The Cardinals traveled to Algona on Tuesday, June 16, to take on the Bulldogs. GHV had a hard time finding their groove on the mound, and fell, 6-1.
Algona racked up the majority of their runs in the first inning, scoring three. They went on to score a run in the second, third and fourth innings. GHV scored their run in the sixth inning.
The Cardinals used three pitchers in Tuesday night’s game, each pitching two innings. Payton James took the loss for the team He struck out one batter, allowed six hits and four runs. Ryan Meyers struck out three, walked two, and gave up two hits and two runs. Colton Schroeder struck out two and walked four.
GHV only connected on four hits. Nick Joynt hit a double, while Harley Forry, Holden Hutcheson and Cade Bamrick all had singles. Connor Burke scored the Cardinal’s lone run.
GHV 8, West Fork 4
The bats were hotter on Thursday night, when the Cardinals hosted West Fork. GHV connected on nine hits, including a triple by Burke that brought in two runners.
Payton James, Alek Goll, Burke and Bamrick all had two hits apiece. Bamrick and James both connected on doubles. James led the team in RBIs with three. Burke and Joynt had 2 RBIs apiece.
Burke and Forry led the team in scoring with two runs apiece. Goll, Brandon Ross, Chase Theobald and Ryley Kozisek each scored a run.
Hutcheson recorded the win on the mound. He struck out two batters, walked one, gave up two hits and two runs. Kaleb Bruggerman pitched half of the game, striking out two and walking five. He allowed two hits and two runs. Schroeder walked four and allowed one hit.
Forest City 10, GHV 0
The Cardinals struggled on the road then they traveled to Forest City on Friday, June 19. GHV just couldn’t stop the Indian bats and were shut-out in five innings, 10-0.
Forest City pitcher Colton Shipman limited the Cardinals to just three hits in the contest, while striking out four batters.
James took the loss for GHV. He gave up 10 hits and 10 runs. He struck out one batter and walked five.
At bat, the Cardinals recorded three singles by Forry, Goll and Schroeder. Forry managed one stolen base.
