Cardinals record two wins
The tides turned for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura softball team, as they ended a losing streak with two big wins last week.
GHV 13, C-G-D 2 (5)
The Cardinals finally got a much deserved win, and they did it in a big way when they defeated Clarion-Goldfield on Tuesday, June 28.
A huge fifth inning, in which GHV got eight runs across the plate sealed the 13-2 victory for the Cards.
The Cardinal bats were on fire. The team connected on 14 hits, compared to only six by C-G-D. Mackenzie Van Gerpen and Katie Oetken had the hot bats. Both connected on three hits. Van Gerpen recorded two doubles and a single with one RBI. She also scored four runs for the Cardinals. Oetken had one double, two singles and two RBIs. Jayden Hughes connected on a double that brought in two runs. Payton Bamrick and Abby Kale had two hits apiece.
Bailee Pitzenberger was the winning pitcher. She pitched all five innings. She struck out two batters and only gave up six hits.
GHV 13, Nashua-Plainfield 6
It was another good night for the Cardinals when they hosted Nashua Plainfield on Wednesday, June 29.
GHV opened strong, taking a 6-1 lead after two innings of play. They scored three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings and another in the sixth for a 13-6 victory.
Ashley Markla started the game on the mound. She pitched five innings, walking five and striking-out two. She gave up nine hits and six runs. Bailee Pitzenberger finished the last two innings. She struck-out two batters.
Katie Oetken led the team on offense going 3/3 at the plate. She recorded two singles and a double and brought in one run. She also scored two runs. Trinity Smith connected on a single and a double. She also recorded two RBIs.
North Union 8, GHV 4 (6)
The Cardinals traveled to North Union on Friday, July 1.
North Union opened the game by scoring five runs in the first innings. GHV put up a good fights and closed the gap, 5-4, by the end of fourth innings. The Warriors put the game out of reach in the six inning by plating three more runs to end with the 8-4 victory.
Jillian Heitland was the losing pitcher. She pitched all six innings. She gave up 13 hits, struck out one and walked two.
Mackenzie Van Gerpen had the hot bat for the Cardinals. She was 3/4 at the plate and had one RBI. Miranda Jackson knocked a single that brought in two runners and Payton Bamrick and Trinity Smith had two hits apiece. One of Smith’s hits was a double.
Jayden Hughes, Jackson, Smith and Sadie Oulman scored GHV’s four runs.
