The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys soccer team faced some tough competition with a record of 1-2 for the week.
Webster City 4, GHV 1
The Cardinals knew Webster City would be a tough game and they proved to be just that. GHV traveled to Webster City, who is ranked in the top 10, on Monday, May 9.
Webster City scored early in the match, putting the Cardinals on their heels. GHV did manage one goal, when Brandon Feuring gave an assist to Dalton Basinger. The Lynx won the match, 4-1.
“I was really proud of the way we played. We just didn’t have enough control to top a really good team,” said Coach Eric Williams. “Webster City is well coached, have lots of skills and play really good soccer.”
Goalie Aidan McRobie had four saves for the Cardinals.
Clear Lake 3, GHV 1
The Cardinals faced another tough foe in Clear Lake on Tuesday, May 10.
“This was such a fun environment. It was senior night, the girls were playing after us and it was the most attended soccer event in the six years of my coaching,” said Coach Eric Williams. “It was fun having so many people there.”
A win for the Cardinals would have been even more fun, but the Lions outlasted the team, 3-2.
GHV played a solid 60 minutes of soccer, unfortunately a match is 80 minutes long and that’s when the wheels fell off.
“We just didn’t have an answer for Clear Lake’s Jared Anderson. He has a drive that never stops and a huge set of skills that we just couldn’t stop in the final minutes,” said Williams.
Scoring the goals for the Cardinals was Connor Burke and Jonah Albertson. Turner Albertson and Ryan Myers both provided assists.

Aidan McRobie had three saves in the goalie position.
The Lions and Cardinals will face each other again in the opening round of Regional action on Monday, May 23, at Clear Lake.
“This match should be very competitive and evenly matched. It will be very exciting to watch and I hope we have another big crowd,” said Williams.
GHV 3, Humboldt 2
The Cardinals ended the week on an upswing with a 3-2 victory over Humboldt on Friday, May 13.
The Wildcats scored first, but unlike the other matches in the week, the Cardinals were able to rally and after some adjustments in the second half were able to pull off the victory.
“I was really proud of the young men for not losing their composure and playing through adversity,” said Coach Eric Williams. “It also was really good to come out with a win and end our four game losing streak.”
Connor Burke had a good game for the Cardinals scoring two goals. Turner Albertson added the third goal. Dalton Basinger provided one assist.
Goalie Aidan McRobie had seven saves.
