Cards fall to Osage; rebound to beat Charles City

Tuesday night’s game against Osage had its ups and downs for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls basketball team.

“We had moments when we looked pretty good and moments when we looked horrible,” said Coach Matt Erpelding.  “We struggled tremendously against their full court pressure in the first half and we made numerous poor decisions, but we did fight back on numerous occasions and I liked what I saw.”

The Cardinals started off slow, getting behind 7-0 before Sadie Oulman connected for two, followed by Jillian Heitland hitting a three and Hannah Lau getting two to knot the game, 7-7. The Green Devils followed that with a nine-point run and the first quarter ended with the Cards trailing, 20-9.

GHV battled back with back-to-back threes from Heitland and Lau, 24-15.  The Cards got to within five points before Osage went on another scoring rampage and closed the half with a 36-23 lead.

The hole was just too deep and the Cardinals couldn’t find their way out.  They fell, 69-52.

Lau led the team with a double-double.  She scored 18 points and had 15 rebounds.  She also had two assists, three steals and five blocked shots.

Heitland also scored in double figures, with 11 points.  Maddie Williams added nine and Oulman and Mara Anderson had six and five points respectively.

Oulman was a leader under the boards with 12 rebounds.  Heitland and Williams each pulled down three.

Williams led the team in assists with four, while Oulman dished out three.  Oulman also had two steals and two blocked shots.

Turnovers haunted the Cardinals with 21 in the first half alone.  The team gave up 24-points on turnovers.

“Other than being very disappointed with our performance against the full court pressure, I am pleased with our performance in this game,” said Erpelding.  “The mistakes we made are correctable and our effort was tremendous.  With that type of effort, once we correct some issues that surfaced we will be just fine.”

GHV 58, Charles City 36

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls basketball team picked up their first win of the season when they handed a 58-36 loss to Charles City on Monday, Nov. 28.

The Cardinals held the Comets to just four points in the first quarter.  Jillian Heitland had a hot hand for GHV, as she connected on two three-point shots, giving the Cards a 16-4 lead at the end of the quarter.  The Cards continued to roll in the second quarter, outscoring Charles City 20-1 for a half time score of 32-5.

“We shot 67 percent from the floor in the second quarter and our defense held them to only one point,” said Coach Matt Erpelding.  “I was able to rest my starters in the second half which will pay huge dividends later in the week when we start conference play.”

The Comets picked it up in the second half.  Both teams scored 10-points in the third quarter.  Charles City went on a 10-point run in the fourth quarter, but the first half deficit was too much and they fell, 58-36.

“I was very happy with our bench play.  They were able to maintain the 31-point lead in the third quarter and they held their own against the Comet starters,” said Erpelding.

Heitland and Maddie Williams both scored 10 points for the Cards.  Jade Hanson chipped in eight points, while Hannah Lau added six.  Mara Anderson, Carlee Frayne, Sadie Oulman, Makaya Shropshire and Nicole Upmeyer added four points apiece.
