The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Cardinals (3-0) could do no wrong Friday night, as they put a boot – or three – to the Forest City Indians (0-3) in Class 2A District 2 play. Three Cardinals rushed for over 100 yards, while the defense held its opponent to -25 yards on the ground in the 38-6 win.

After a long drive, Lucas Prohaska was the first to put points on the board for the Cardinals on a 34-yard run. The Indians took the kickoff back to the house for the team’s sole breath of life.

GHV punched it in two more times before halftime on the legs of Harley Forry.  One TD came on a four-yard run and another on a 58-yard run. The Cardinals walked into the locker room with an 18-6 lead and every ounce of momentum on their side.

The Cardinal onslaught continued, scoring twice in the third quarter and commanding the field at every turn. In the third quarter, it was Cade Baker’s turn to do the scoring.  He got into the end zone on a break-through 86-yard touchdown run and a second time on another monstrous 47-yard run.

Jack VanDusseldorp was last in the endzone.  He managed a one-yard dive in the fourth quarter to cap off the game, 38-6, for the Cardinal win.

The Cardinals only punted twice the entire game, despite a relatively low-scoring first half.

“We started a little slow this week, but we’re able to come out the second half and play well,” said GHV Head Coach Scott VanDusseldorp. “I am proud of this team and their ability to play together.”

Baker lead the Cardinal offensive effort with 155-yards rushing on eight carries for two touchdowns. Forry had 101-yards on seven carries for two touchdowns, while Shaw managed a heavy load of 28 carries for 100-yards. Prohaska also chipped in 48-yards on seven carries for one touchdown.  VanDusseldorp added 19-yards on five carries and a touchdown.

Prohaska also attempted three passes, completing two of them for 38-yards. Hauling in his passes were Forry with 36-yards and Shaw for two-yards.

The Indians were lead on offense by quarterback Ben Midtgaard with eight of 24 completions for 150 yards. His receiving corps was Riley Wilson with three catches for 22 yards, Mitch Lambert with 67 on two, Timmy Thompson with 48 on two and Logan Hall with one catch for 13 yards.

The Cardinals were lead on defense by Gabe Umbarger, who logged four and one-half tackles and one sack. Nick Joynt had four, Shaw had three and one-half with a sack, while Cade Baker added three and one-half with two sacks. Connor Smith had three tackles and one sack, Matt Sonquist and Brandon Feuring added two and one-half tackles apiece, while Grady Umbarger and VanDusseldorp each added a tackle and one-half.

“We had three running backs with 100 or more yards rushing. It was really nice to see that we have several options,” said VanDusseldorp.

The Cardinals continue district play this Friday at home against Hampton-Dumont (2-1).
