Cards pick-up three big wins
The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura baseball team dropped a close contest, but followed that up with three wins to move their record to 16-11.
Eagle Grove 2, GHV 1
It was a battle of pitchers on Monday, June 26, when GHV traveled to Eagle Grove. The low-scoring showdown ended with the Eagles on top, 2-1.
The Cardinals got on the board first in the top of the third inning. Dane Whipple advanced to third on a wild pitch. Landon Dalbeck singled on a line drive, that drove Whipple in.
Eagle Grove scored two runs in the bottom of the third, one on an error and another by a runner stealing home. Neither team was able to score to rest of the game and Eagle Grove claimed the victory.
The Cardinals did outhit the Eagles. GHV recorded five hits, while the Eagles only connected on three.
Colton Schroeder took the loss for GHV. He went six innings, surrendering two runs, three hits and striking out nine.
Dalbeck led the team at the plate, going two-for-three with one RBI. One of Dalbeck’s hits was a double.
Whipple connected on a double, while Ryan Meyers and Schroeder both had a single.
GHV 6, Clarion-Goldfield 5
A walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning allowed GHV to post a 6-5 victory over Clarion-Goldfield on Tuesday, June 27.

The Cardinals posted the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning when Brady Hess scored on a wild pitch.
The Cowboys scored one run in the second inning and GHV got in two more runs, 3-1. Another wild pitch brought Ryan Meyers in for one of the runs. A fielder’s choice that allowed Ryley Kozisek to score was the second run.
GHV scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, both on errors. Connor Burke scored on an error by the right fielder and Cade Bamrick scored on a wild pitch for a 5-1 lead.
Clarion-Goldfield picked up their game, scoring four unanswered runs to tie the game heading into the bottom of the seventh. With the pressure on, Kozisek hit a line drive to left field and Holden Larsen scored the winning run.
Kozisek not only saved the game, but was the winning pitcher. He threw one and one-third innings, giving up two runs and five hits. Justin Reding started the game for GHV. He threw five and two-thirds innings, surrendering three runs, three hits and striking out three.
Meyers, Dane Whipple, Bamrick, Hess and Kozisek all managed one hit.
The Cardinals played tough defense and didn’t commit a single error. Hess made the most plays with six.
GHV 11, North Union 2
A huge fifth inning helped the Cardinals to defeat North Union, 11-2, on Friday, June 30.
North Union put up two runs to open the game. They held the lead until the bottom of the fourth when GHV scored three runs to take the lead for good.
The Cardinals sealed the victory by scoring eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game. The big inning was thanks to a single by Landon Dalbeck that brought in Colton Schroeder and Dane Whipple. A single by Ryley Kozisek allowed Dalbeck to cross the plate. Conner Burke knocked a double that scored Holden Larson. Brady Hess hit a ground ball and reached base on an error and Kozisek scored. Schroeder hit a double that brought in Burke and Hess. The scoring run continued when Whipple hit a single that plated Schroeder.
Schroeder, Dalbeck and Meyers all had two RBIs apiece.
Ryan Meyers earned the win for GHV. He pitched five innings, giving up two runs, three hits and striking out nine.
The Cardinals had 11 hits in the game. Kozisek, Meyers, Whipple and Schroeder all had multiple hits.
GHV didn’t commit a single error in the field. Sherwood had 12 chances in the field, the most for the team.
