Cards reognized on All-District teams

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura football team was well represented on Class 2A, District 2 All-District teams.

“We had several young men make a team this year and they all deserve the recognition they received,” said Coach Scott Van Dusseldorf.

Seven players earned First Team recognition: seniors, Grady Umbarger, Chase Theobald and Conner Shaw; and juniors, Dane Whipple, Jack Van Dusseldorp, Nick Joynt and Connor Burke.

Umbarger, a linebacker, finished the season with 24 solo tackles and he had nine tackles for a loss.

Theobald, a defensive back, finished the year with 32 solo tackles and one tackle for a loss.

Shaw collected 996-yards rushing on 202 attempts as a running back.  He also had seven receptions for 102-yards and he had 10 touchdowns.

Whipple was an offensive lineman with 14 solo tackles and four tackles for a loss.

Van Dusseldorp, a defensive tackle, had five solo tackles and two tackles for loss.

Joynt made the First Team as a utility player.  He ended the season with 491-yards rushing on 82 carries.  He also had 24 receptions for 425-yards.  He recorded eight touchdowns for the Cardinals.

Burke was selected as a kicker.  He was 15/16 on PAT goals.  He also was 4.6 on field goals, with the longest field goal being 42-yards.

Earning Honorable Mention recognition for the Cardinals was: seniors Tucker Datema, offensive line; Dylan Mahlstedt, utility; Zach Abbas, defensive end; juniors Anthony Sherwood, tight end; and Connor Burke, defensive end.

The following players were Academic All-District: Ryan Meyers, Colton Schroeder, Joynt, Burke, Van Dusseldorp, Whipple, Tyler Kumsher, Theobald, Shaw, Clay Johnson and Josh Chizek.

GHV ended the year with an overall record of 6-3.
