Cataldo and Dalbeck pick up one-two finish in 3200 run

HD Boy’s Invite

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys finished near the bottom of a nine-team field at the HD Boy’s Invite held on Monday, April 17, held at Hampton-Dumont.

A majority of the teams’ points came from a one-two finish by Ray Cataldo and Logan Dalbeck in the 3200 meter run.  Cataldo won with a time of 10:38.96 and Dalbeck finished in 10:45.68.

Keegan Sassaman also collected some points for the Cardinals.  He was third in the high jump, clearing 5’10”.  He was sixth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.29.  In the long jump, he finished seventh with a leap of 17’07”.

Also recording points for the team was:

*4x100 meter relay - Luke Brown, Tyler Wilson, Fred Burnett, Derek Brown, seventh, 52.33

*400 meter dash - Andy Schreur, eighth, 1:05.02

*800 meter run - Nathan Larson, eighth, 2:20.03

*4x400 meter relay - Larson, Cataldo, Derek Brown, Luke Brown, eighth, 4:06.01

*Sprint Medley - Luke Brown, Wilson, Burnett, Larson, eighth, 1:50.76

*Distance Medley - Wilson, Burnett, Luke Brown, Derek Brown, eighth, 4:20.30

North Butler Meet

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys competed at North Butler on Friday, April 21, without their top runner, Reece Smith, who was trying to qualify for the Drake Relays.  Points were not at a premium for the Cardinals, who finished in eighth place with 20 points.  Forest City won the meet with 133 points and St. Ansgar was second with 92.

Ray Cataldo won the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:38.11.

“Ray had a great race.  His time currently puts him in the top eight in 2A and was his personal best,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens.

Logan Dalbeck also had a great race in the 800 meter run.  Dalbeck placed second with a time of 2:08.66.

The rest of GHV’s points came from Keegan Sassaman, who was fifth in the high jump.  He cleared 5’10”.

“The boys are continuing to improve their marks, jumps and times,” said Steffens.  “They are looking forward to competing at the upcoming home meets.”

Smith competed in Gowrie on Tuesday and Waukee on Thursday in his quest to qualify for the Drake Relays in the 3200 meter run.  In Waukee, he ran a 9:52.67 and placed second.  Smith failed to qualify.  The cutoff for Drake was 9:49.57 and Smith’s best time for the season is 9:50.87.
