Charles R. Grandon

Charles “Granny” Romaine Grandon, 84, of Manly, Iowa, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 2015 at his home.

Memorial mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manly, with the Rev. Neil Manternach officiating.  Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.  Inurnment will be at a later date.   Family will greet friends one hour before the service at the church.

Military honors were held at the time of visitation on Tuesday, Sept. 29, by the Manly American Legion Post #110 with a scriptural wake following.

Granny was born April 11, 1931, in Laurens, Iowa, the son of Charles E. and Genevieve (Fex) Grandon.  He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1949.  He enlisted in the United States Navy serving as a Seabee during the Korean War.  Following his discharge he attended Mason City Jr. College and Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa.

He came back to Clear Lake and worked with his father for Duesenberg Construction.  He married Susan MacDonald in 1960, they lived in Denver, Colo. and later Chicago, Ill., before returning to North Iowa in 1968. To this union three children were born; Michael Shane, Kit, and Jill.

The last 45 years he has lived in Manly, Iowa.  After managing service stations he worked for Winnebago Industries from 1971 until he retired. During his retirement he worked for Walmart as a bike assembler.

Granny was involved in Alcoholics Anonymous for the last 33 years and formed many lasting friendships through his meetings. He befriended people from around the world through AA Chatrooms and loved traveling to gatherings to meet them.

He enjoyed gardening and was very inventive, creating everything from his own solar collectors to composters. He was always thinking outside the box. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, going to trapper’s rendezvous every fall, celebrating Halloween and lunching with his brother, Michael J.

He is survived by his two children; Kit Grandon, Manly and Jill Houston, Manly; four grandchildren, Jessica Shackleton, Mason City, Iowa, Bethany Shackleton, Christopher More, and Cory More, Manly; 10 great-grandchildren, Andrew, Alyssa, Ashton, Tony, Bengamin, Ethan, Grahm, Jaxon, Nicholas and Blade; brother, Michael (Mary) Grandon, Clear Lake; three nieces and one nephew; cousin, Honi Cooper, Hot Springs Village, Ark.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Michael Shane; and his best friend, Dean Estep.

Bride Colonial Chapels, Manly, was in charge of arrangements.
