CL girls finish as runner-up

The Clear Lake girls golf team qualified for a return to the State Meet with a runner-up finish at the Regional Tournament played Monday, May 21, in Waverly.  Dubuque Wahlert scored 344 to claim the Regional title; the Lions finished with a 361.  Host Waverly-Shell Rock was four strokes back with a 365.

Clear Lake’s Ashley DeLong, a junior, was the Regional medalist with a six-over-par 76.  Wahlert’s Anna Jensen was the only other golfer to shoot below 80.  She came into the clubhouse with a 78.

The Lions’ other counting scores were provided by Erin Carew (92), Jordyn Barragy (93) and Mattie Krause (100).

“I am really proud of this team after this meet. We shot 26 better than our previous low score for 18 holes,” said first year Coach Colby Andrews after the meet.  “I told the girls going in if we shot in the 370s we would make it to State.  I am glad they didn’t listen and shot in the 360s instead, ensuring we would qualify for State.  It has been a crazy season with the weather this spring, but the girls are hitting their stride at just the right time.”

The Class 3A State Meet will be played at Cold Water in Ames on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 29 and 30.
