The Clear Lake girls golf team was edged in a dual meet last week, but rebounded with wins at a triangular and 18-hole tournament. The Lions, who are now 6-1, were slated to travel to Humboldt on Tuesday, April 26. Friday, April 29, they will host Algona and Iowa Falls-Alden and Saturday the team will travel to Clarion-Goldfield for an 18-hole tournament.
Newman Catholic 185, CL 188
Emily Snelling captured medalist honors, but Newman Catholic picked up the team win in a match played Tuesday, April 19, at Veteran’s Memorial in Clear Lake, 185-188.
“The difference of our first two meets has been a combined four strokes, and so this match was a great indication to the girls that no matter if we are having a great round or a bad round that every stroke matters, because just one single shot could make the difference of a match,” said Coach Adam Brinkman.
Snelling was the medalist with a score of 38. Other counting scores for CLHS included Ashley DeLong’s 41, Jordyn Barragy 53, and Mattie Krause 56.
CL 191, WC 211, St. Ed’s 232
On Friday, April 22, the Lions traveled to Webster City for a triangular with the Lynx and St. Edmond. Clear Lake won with a score of 191. Webster City finished with 211 and St. Edmond had 232.
Emily Snelling was medalist with a score of 40. Other scores for the Lions were provided by Ashley DeLong (45), Jordyn Barragy (48) and Erin Carew (58).
“I thought overall we did some goods things. Ashley was hitting the ball well; she may not hit it as far as some other girls, but she is one of the most consistent golfers that I have seen,” said Coach Brinkman. “Jordyn Barragy had her best round this season. She has been struggling with her longer clubs, but she got into a good rhythm with her driver and that abled her to take that to the rest of her game.”
New Hampton tournament
The team traveled to New Hampton Saturday for its first 18-hole tournament. Clear Lake was the winner with a 378. New Hampton was runner-up with 383, followed by Sumner-Fredericksburg with a 307 and South Winnesheik with 441. Emily Snelling was medalist with a 78.
“For us to come out of our first 18-hole tournament with a victory is definitely a great thing, but the girls will tell you we still have plenty of work to do,” said Coach Brinkman. “We struggled with our chipping and putting, and left a lot more strokes on the greens than I would have liked to see. If we continue to put the work into the short game we will continue to decrease some strokes off our scores.”
Ashley DeLong carded an 88 for the Lions, while Jordyn Barragy came in with a 104 and Mattie Krause finished with a score of 108.
“This was Mattie’s first career 18-hole tournament ever, and for her to come in with a score of 108 was a good confidence booster. Emily started off a little sluggish, but was able to fight back and birdied four out of her last five holes to take the medalist honors.”
