The Clear Lake girls moved their record to 7-11 last week after going .500 in four games.  The Lions are 3-5 in the North Central Conference.

CL 6, GHV 3

The Lions started off the week by defeating Garner, 6 -3, on Tuesday, June 21.

Macy Mixdorf helped the Lions to score in every inning, but two.  Mixdorf went 3/4 at the plate with a triple and three RBIs.  Chloe Mueller was also 3/4 with an RBI.

Michaela Niles, Rachel Barillas, Kayla Ritter and Erin O’Tool each smacked doubles for the Lions.

Kiersten Baalson collected the win, going all seven innings.  She struck-out five and walked only one.

“It was nice to see our team bounce back after a weekend tournament.  I felt like we played a complete game both in the field and at the plate,” said Coach Austin Peterson.

Mackenzie VanGerpen and Bailee Pitzenberger each had two hits for the Cardinals.

Pitzenberger took the loss on the mound.  She gave up 10 hits and six runs, three of them earned.  She struck out one.

12-0, in an NCC contest.

The Lions had only three hits in the game.  They were provided by Macy Mixdorf, Chloe Mueller and Tori Fyfe.

Kiersten Baalson took the loss on the mound, giving up seven hits and six earned runs.  She walked one and struck out one.

“We left quite a few people on base, which hurt us.  That fourth inning we just couldn’t seem to step up and make a play.”

CL 12, Forest City 6 (8)

The Lions bounced back after a tough loss to Clarion in a big way.  A six run eighth inning secured a 12-6 Clear Lake win.

Clear Lake started strong, with two runs on the first and another in the second.  They added two more in the fourth to go up 5-0.

Forest City got hot in the bottom of the fourth and brought in four runs to narrow the score to 5-4.  The Lions added an insurance run in the sixth, but the home team rallied in the bottom of the seventh and got two runs to send the game into extra innings with the score tied 6-6.

“It was nice to see our girls not giving up after losing our lead in the seventh,” said Coach Peterson.  “It was also nice to see us bounce back after a tough loss to Clarion.  This was an exciting game for us to be in.”

The Lions refused to let the game slip away and they exploded for six runs in the eighth.

Sara Faber led the team, going 4/5 with a double and three RBIs.  Macy Mixdorf, Julia Merfeld, Michaela Niles and Erin O’Tool each recorded two hits on the day.  Mixdorf and Rachel Barillas were credited with two RBIs.

Reagan Brackey started off the game and went four innings, giving up four runs. Kiersten Baalson came in and collected the win.  She gave up three hits and two earned runs in four innings.  She struck out two and walked one.

Webster City 8, CL 4

The Lions were home to end the week against North Central Conference foe Webster City.  Clear Lake had its chances, but couldn’t seem to get a hit to open up the game.  A late rally in the seventh was not be enough and they fell, 8-4, to the Lynx.

The Lions had seven hits on the night, with Macy Mixdorf going 2/4 with an RBI.  Kayla Ritter, Tori Fyfe, Julia Merfeld, Erin O’Tool and Sara Faber each had a hit.

Clear Lake opened with two runs in the first inning, but fell behind when the Lynx scored twice in the second, third and fifth inning.  They added two more to take an 8-2 lead in the seventh.

The Lions were able to score two in the bottom of the seventh before falling, 8-2.

Kiersten Baalson was tagged with the loss, giving up eight hits, walking three and striking out four.

“We played a great game.  Webster City is very fast on defense and they were able to make some plays that most teams don’t make.  One hit drops and I feel we have a different game on our hands.  I was proud of the way the girls battled tonight,” said Coach Peterson.
