CL girls pull off a close one
The Clear Lake girls improved their record to 3-1 with two more wins last week. The Lions opened the week with a non-conference win over West Fork, then kicked off North Central Conference play by topping Clarion-Goldfield-Dows by one-point.

The Lions continue to play pressure defense and it is helping them on both ends of the court.
“Our defense continues to be our strength right now. We are doing a nice job of pressuring the ball and playing good team defense to create turnovers,” said Coach Bart Smith.
The Lion D held West Fork to just eight points in the first quarter and six in the second. Clear Lake held a 22-14 lead at the halftime break.
The Lion offense heated up in the second half and outscored the War Hawks, 22-11, to extend the lead.
Emily Snelling and Jordyn Barragy both finished in double figures. Snelling led the way with 18 points, while Barragy, a sophomore, had 11 points, including three treys.
Jordyn Barragy is starting to be consistent scorer for us and can give us another threat from the perimeter,” said Coach Smith.
Chloe Mueller and Erin O’Tool had eight points apiece for the Lions. Ellie Biebesheimer put in six points, Jessica Faber had three and McKenna Backhaus added two.

The young Lions learned how to pick up a win in a close game Friday night. Clarion-Goldfield-Dows pushed the Lions to the brink in a 54-53 contest.
“We didn’t defend like our previous games tonight,” said Coach Smith. “We allowed too much dribble penetration, which breaks down the defense and can give up open shots, which Clarion Goldfield made.”
The Lions got off to a good start and held a 16-10 advantage after the first quarter. A good run helped the team to finish the second quarter by outscoring the Cowgirls 14-8. Clear Lake held a 30-18 lead at the half.
Momentum swung the other direction in the third quarter and the Cowgirls wrangled their way back into the game by scoring 22 points to Clear Lake’s seven.
“We did a good job finishing the second quarter with a good run but failed to continue that momentum into the third. The positive is getting a win in a close game and over coming some adversity with our young team. We can learn a lot from this game,” said Coach Smith.
Emily Snelling and Jordyn Barragy again led the team in scoring with 18 and 12 points. Snelling also recorded five steals in the game.
Ellie Biebesheimer and Erin O’Tool controlled the boards for the Lions, with Biebesheimer grabbing 12 rebounds and O’Tool 10. Barragy also had a good night with seven rebounds.
O’Tool put in seven points for the team, followed by Biebesheimer and Chloe Mueller with six apiece. Jessica Faber finished with three points and McKenna Backhaus had added two.
