The Clear Lake girls soccer team improved their record to 4-2 last week with an exciting victory in overtime.
IF-A 4, CL 0
The Lions resumed action after a long break on Monday, May 2. The Lions struggled to get back in the groove and fell to Iowa Falls-Alden, 4-0.
“We hadn’t had a game for 10 days and it looked like it,” said Coach Steve Faber. “Iowa Falls looked strong and physically out played us in about every position.” With that said, it was a good experience for the kids. We will take this experience and learn from it.”
The Cadets held a 2-0 lead at halftime and continued to press in the second half.
Goalkeeper Ellie Biebesheimer had 19 saves in the game.
Erin O’Tool took five shots on goal, while Milo Dugan made two attempts.
CL 2, Humboldt 1
A strong second half and grace under pressure in overtime lifted the Lions to a 2-1 home victory over Humboldt Thursday, May 5.
The Lions struggled to find their stride in the first half, falling behind 1-0 by the end of the period. In the second, Clear Lake’s defense buckled down and Erin O’Tool found the net with 11 minutes left in regulation.
With the score tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, the game moved into overtime.
Both teams went scoreless in the two overtime periods which led to a shoot out.
The Wildcats kicked first. Goalkeeper Ellie Biebesheimer was strong at the net, denying their first attempt.
The Lions’ Lexi Holtz answered the call, giving her team the lead with a strong kick into the upper left corner of the goal.
Humboldt tied the score again with their on-suing kick.
Jessica Faber put the Lions up for the second time with a power kick that went off the hands of the goalie.
Humboldt again tied the score on their next attempt.
Clear Lake freshman Katelyn Moore’s kick went high off the cross bar and Humboldt’s next kick went wide off the side bar, leaving the score 2-2. Humboldt had made four scoring attempts and Clear Lake three.
The Lions’ fourth kicker, Milo Dugan, placed what would prove to be the winning kick in the lower left goal. With Humboldt’s last kick, the best they could hope for was a tie and as their kick sailed left of the goal Clear Lake’s fourth victory of the season was complete.
“Biebesheimer, with her 14 saves, is proving herself a strong goalie,” said Clear Lake Coach Steve Faber. “Both Madi Wendel and Jenna Wilkinson also played strong for us.”
