The Clear Lake baseball team is set to begin post-season play Friday night in Algona. CL 5, H-D 4
A walk-off single propelled Clear Lake to a decisive, dramatic victory over Hampton-Dumont-CAL Tuesday night, July 6.
The game was tied at 4-4 with Clear Lake batting in the bottom of the eighth when Carson Toebe singled on the first pitch of his at-bat, scoring a run.
The Lions built a four-run lead in the sixth inning and then held off the Bulldogs’ charge. Hampton scored four runs in the failed comeback on a double, error, walk and passed ball.
Clear Lake’s big sixth inning got started with walks to Tyres Green-Harrington and Austin Warnke. With two outs Toebe doubled on a fly ball to center field, scoring both the runners. The inning was punctuated by an Eric Ritter home run which brought Warnke in and made the score 4-0 in Clear Lake’s favor.
In the top of the seventh the Bulldogs tied things up with a lead-off single. The runner scored on a double. After the Lions got their first out in the inning a hard-hit ground ball handcuffed shortstop Carson Toebe and a second run scored. With two outs pitcher Jett Neuberger began to struggle. A single was sandwiched between two walks and the bases were loaded. After runs scored on a passed ball and wild pitch, making the score 4-4, Coach AJ Feuerbach elected to bring in Andrew Formanek to relieve Neuberger. The right-hander was able to stop the bleeding and the game went to extra innings.
Formanek got the win, pitching one and one-third innings, allowing no runs on no hits, striking out one and walking none. Neuberger gave up four runs in six and two-thirds innings of work. He struck out 10.
Caden Jones and Toebe each had multiple hits for the Lions. Jones led the team with three hits in four at-bats.

Jack Crane’s lead-off tripe in the fourth set up the Lions’ winning run. Crane came home on a ground ball hit by Carson Toebe.
