The Clear Lake boys made the most of their trip to the State Track Meet in Des Moines last weekend. Each of the members of the team who participated was awarded one, two or three medals for their efforts.
The Lions placed three relays, which Coach AJ Feuerbach and Assistant Coach Mike Callahan believe is the most since 1991.
“That is 25 years ago and before Clear Lake had four spring sports. We feel that is quite an achievement for our boys track team!” said Feuerbach. “I am so happy for our kids!”
The highest placement for the Lions was in the 4x100. Seniors Zach Tatum, Cooper Merrill, Parker Truesdell and Chase Bacon set a school record in the preliminaries, running a time of 43.54. A day later the quartet placed fourth in the finals in 43.56.
The same group of runners placed eighth in the 4x200 in a time of 1:31.13.
Clear Lake’s second school record came in the shuttle hurdle relay. The team of Truesdell, Parker Crispin, Zach Lester and Bacon improved from their eighth place finish in the prelims to place fifth overall in the finals. Their time of 59.73 met the goal the hurdlers had set to break the one-minute mark. The school record was the icing on the cake.
Crispin, a junior, also qualified in the 110 hurdles and recorded a ninth place finish in the preliminaries. His time was 15.68.
Bacon also competed in the 200

“I want to thank our parents and the people that came down to support our kids. It truly is an amazing event and if you have never been to the State Track Meet, you should go. It is largest attended high school sports event in the nation,” added Feuerbach. “I want to thank my Assistant Coach Troy Tysdahl and volunteer coach Mike Callanan. They have been great support to me and wonderful for our kids. We lose five great seniors in Lucas Kirchhoff, Zach Tatum, Cooper Merrill, Parker Truesdell and Chase Bacon. I wish them the best in their futures and it’s time for younger guys to step and be the next ones to do great things.”
