Clear Lake girls back in the swing
The return of defending State champion Emily Snelling highlighted Clear Lake girls golf action last week.
“With all of the cold and rainy weather we have been having, we haven’t been able to do very much practicing. This was our first round of golf in over a week and a half so we struggled of getting in our rhythm,” said Coach Adam Brinkman.
At Charles City
On Tuesday, May 2, the Lions traveled to Charles City for a quadrangular meet. New Hampton bested the field with a score 179. Clear Lake was next with 192, followed by Charles City with 209 and Waukon with 210.
Snelling and Ashley DeLong both carded 42s for the Lions. Mattie Krause and Jordyn Barragy provided the other counting scores, a 53 and 55 respectively.
“This was Emily’s first meet back of the season since her injury, and although she didn’t play as well as she wanted, it’s just great to have her back in the lineup and on the golf course,” said Coach Adam Brinkman. “Emily is a great leader and an even better role model to the other girls, so we are happy that she is able to finish the season with us.”
CL 174, H-D 216
On Thursday, May 4, the Lions hosted their final home meet against Hampton-Dumont. Clear Lake was an easy winner, 174-216.
Senior Emily Snelling finished her home career with a 38.
“Emily is one of those girls that no matter how well she shoots, she will always find the flaws in her round and that is what makes her such a great athlete. She is still limited on what she can hit and not being able to hit her driver is definitely hard on her,” said Coach Adam Brinkman.
Ashley DeLong came into the clubhouse with a 41, followed by Jordyn Barragy with a 47 and Mattie Krause with 48.
“I was impressed with Jordyn and Mattie’s rounds,” added Coach Brinkman. “They both hit the ball well and are getting better around the greens. This was a great meet for us at our final home match of the season. To have all four scores below 50 is definitely a positive thing. We know we can shoot well as a team, and this will definitely motivate the girls heading Into postseason play.”
