(Above) The Clear Lake girls soccer team had an exciting week, going 2-1 in matches. The Lions edged Humboldt and split matches in Saturday’s Garner Tournament.
CL 1, Humboldt 0
The Lions played Humboldt Thursday night and came away with a 1-0 victory
“It was one of those games where we just played flat,” said Coach Greg Jennings, who called the win “uneventful.” “It was hard for the girls to get anything going. We controlled the ball well, just struggled to find our rhythm.
Emily Benitz scored the game winner for the Lions.
“She has been working really hard for the team and got rewarded with the Lions’ only goal,” said Jennings. “She’s a fun kid to watch. She improves everyday and works and learns.”
The in junior varsity game, the Lions found victory for the first time this season with a 1-0 win over the Wildcats. Val Campos scored for the Lions off a Perla Valsquez assist.
“The girls looked great,” said Coach Jennings. “The JV hasn’t had a lot of games, but definitely played well in this one. It was fun to see the hard work these girls have been putting in paid off.”

Garner Tournament
The girls came away with a split in two competitive matches played at Garner.
The Lions started the day against GHV and unlike a previous meeting, they were able to capitalize on opportunities and earned a 2-0 victory.
Darby Dodd struck first for the Lions, giving her team a 1-0 lead.
“We controlled the ball well and kept on the pressure,” said Coach Greg Jennings.
Kaylee McCarl gave the Lions a little more breathing room, finding the net for the second time this season.
Following that win, Clear Lake moved on to play Hudson.
“It’s never easy playing back-to-back, especially against a very organized team like Hudson,” said Coach Jennings.
The lions fell early to a 2-0 Hudson lead at half.
“I told my kids at halftime ‘just play.’ Do what we do and go have fun,” he said.
Shortly after the second half whistle, Darby Dodd cut the Lead in half with a great 20-yard shot.
“That kid is fun to watch. She is very patient with the ball,” praised Jennings.
The fun continued when Clear Lake goal keeper Chelsey Holck tied the score. The tie goal came from Clear Lake’s goal keeper Chelsey Holck.
“Now that is something you don’t see every day— an 85-yard goal. She got her foot on it and it just sailed,” explained the coach. “It took a great bounce and went right over the goal keeper’s head.”
With just minutes left, Hudson found the goal for a 3-2 victory over the Lions.
“It was a great game and overall a great day of soccer,” added Jennings.
