Clear Lake girls tennis team falls in Regional team competition

The Clear Lake girls tennis team kicked off the post-season by traveling to Decorah Saturday for Regional team competition.  Individual Regional play will take place Thursday, May 18.

The Lions faced Decorah in the first round of Regional team play.  There were several close matches, but ultimately the Lions fell, 5-2.

Gretchen Jones played Kally Peterson in the number one singles match.  It was a hard battle, ending in a super tiebreaker.  Jones fell  7-6 (7-5 set tie breaker), 4-6, and 8-10 super tiebreaker.

Kiersten Baalson was down in her number two match, but battled back to take a number of tough wins from Anna Spencer and ended with a final score of 3-6, 2-6.

Chloe Mueller took her first set against Carina Yee with good control and lost a couple games but regained her game and defeated her opponent 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 (super tie breaker).

Maranda Harrison played strong games to a very equal competitor, Vita Domnenko, and eventually fell after a number of close games 1-6, 2-6.

Ali Witt played solid all the way through her sets against Mara Frieden, but lost after many close games of competitive tennis, 2-6, 2-6.

Mikayla Brant was down 1-4 in her first set, but according to Coach Martha Andrews she got a different mindset on what was necessary to win.  “She came back and won her first set.  Mikayla lost her second set, but again readjusted her game and won her super tie-breaker for a win.”

The Lions tuned up for the post-season with a May 8 match against Webster City and May 11 meeting with Aplington-Parkersburg.
