Color the Wind Kite Fest cancelled
The much anticipated Color the Wind Kite Festival, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 18, has been cancelled due to rapidly deteriorating ice conditions at the downtown Sea Wall.
“The safety of the kite flyers and the public is of primary concern,” said organizers Larry and Kay Day.
The Days were expecting to host another huge event in 2017 and were to be filmed for a CBS Sunday Morning show feature. However, temperatures in the mid to upper 40s this week and 50s forecast by the weekend, meant conditions would continue to decline.
“CBS producer Mark Hudspeth and anchor Lee Cowan are both very interested in coming next year,” reported the Days.
The couple said they are considering changing the date for future festivals to improve the odds for better ice conditions.
“We will coordinate with the Chamber of Commerce and the organizers of January events to try to set a January date for next year’s event in the hope that we can be the beneficiary of colder temperatures to build and maintain good solid ice,” they said.
