County leaders discuss B35 reconstruction

Summer is the time for road construction, and this year Clear Lake motorists are bound to experience some disruptions to their usual travel routes.

Cerro Gordo County Engineer Mary Kelly led an informational meeting Tuesday, April 5, to let the public know about reconstruction plans for County Road B-35 between Clear Lake and Mason City.  The $3.1 million project will begin in mid-May and continue through the summer.  Completion is expected in late September.  Heartland Asphalt, of Mason City, will be the contractor for the work.

According to Kelly, the project will involve a two-and-one-half mile stretch “Old Highway 106” between Lark and Jonquil Avenues.

Detours can be expected and will be posted.

The project will include removal of the existing pavement, grading and widening for new pavement, construction of turn lanes and relocation of the trail near the intersections to accommodate the new turn lanes.  The roadway will be closed for the duration of the project, keeping access for local residents only.  The trail will also be closed intermittently to allow for the relocation.

Kelly said efforts are being made to reduce the number of days the bike trail will be closed during the construction project. In early July, the existing trail will be removed. According to Kelly, earth work for the trail will be done, followed by placement of a granular base and pavement of the new trail.

Those with questions about the project may contact the County Engineer’s Office at 641-424-9037, or go to the office’s Facebook page at facebook.com/cerro.gordo.county.engineer.
