Dale Kjellsen

Dale Eugene Kjellsen, 64, of Ventura, died Friday, May 5, 2017 in Clear Lake, while working on one of his inventions.

According to his wishes, he was cremated and a celebration of his life will be held later this year.  Family suggests memorials for the upcoming Celebration of Life be sent in care of Warp Drive Inc., 1207 Highway 18 E., Ventura, IA 50482.

Dale was born in Volga, S.D., the son of Dwayne Waulton and Marlys Darlene (Rikansrud) Kjellsen.  He attended Arlington High School, Arlington, S.D. and continued his education by obtaining an automotive technical degree in Fargo, N.D.

He moved to Clear Lake during the early 1970’s and worked in the body shop for Sedars Motors, in Mason City.

Dale’s early interest in hang-gliding fueled experimentation with powered hang-glider flight. As a pioneer of experimental aviation, he founded Teratorn Aircraft Inc., Clear Lake, in the mid-70’s, which manufactured ultralight aircraft.

Nearly 30-years ago, he founded Warp Drive Incorporated. Warp Drive continues to manufacture carbon fiber composite aircraft propellers which are sold around the world. Dale’s creation and passion in Warp Drive will be carried on by his two sons and loyal employees.

He was involved in many earth moving projects in the area, such as building ponds and working on the racetrack at Mason City Motor Speedway.

Dale was creative, committed, unique, and driven to bring his many ideas to life. He influenced many during a life that was tragically cut short. His hard work and passion left an imprint on the aviation industry, the local community, and the people who knew him. Many people loved him and he will be missed.

Dale is survived by his two sons, Dale “Kelly,” and Kalvin; fiancé, Joyce Hill; sisters, Gloria (Walt) Selchert, Roxanne Wengler, and Karen Falla; brothers, Steven Kjellsen, Bart Kjellsen, Jeff Kjellsen; his longtime friend Daryl (Lynae) Heinemann; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Mark Kjellsen; and his infant sister, Marcia Kjellsen.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.
