Edward Hanes

Edward Eugene Hanes, 80, 405 27th Ave. S., Clear Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012 at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.  

A Celebration of Life was held Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012 at the Surfer Lounge in the Surf Ballroom, Clear Lake.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Clear Lake Sailing School, in his name, in C/O Nancy Jo Lundeen, 5950 S. Shore Court, Clear Lake, Iowa  50428.

Edward Eugene Hanes was born on June 28, 1932 in Mason City, the son of Joel Fairman and Helen Atwood (Wells) Hanes.  

Ed graduated from Mason City High School in the class of 1950, attended and graduated from Mason City Junior College (N.I.A.C.C.) in 1952, and Iowa State University in 1954, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mechanical Engineering.  

He was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Billie Jackson, in 1953, and to this marriage three daughters were born, Jacquelyn, Sandyann, and Nancy Jo.

Ed was inducted into the Army on Feb. 3, 1955 in Des Moines, and was stationed at Fort Sill, Okla. serving his country honorably and faithfully until his honorable discharge on Feb. 1, 1957.  

Ed returned to Mason City, and joined the family business (Yelland & Hanes).  He later purchased the business with his brother, Joel, and opened stores in Clear Lake, Hampton and Albert Lea, Minn.  They also started a wholesale stationery business in the basement, which later became Midwest Wholesale.  When Ed retired they had over 50 employees.  

Ed was very active in the communities of Mason City and Clear Lake. As president of the Mason City Jaycees, he was awarded the “Outstanding Young Man Award.”  While president of the Jaycees they conducted the first oral polio vaccine clinic and gave out 70,000 doses making enough profit to purchase the first defibrillator for Mercy Hospital.  Ed was elected to the state Jaycees office of Vice President, and was president of the Clear Lake Booster Club.  While president of the North Iowa Huskies Hockey Club, they won the National Championship, and he personally was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the United States Hockey League.  He was an active member of the Clear Lake Yacht Club since 1945, serving as Head Judge and Commodore.  He was on the board of Dixiefest, inducted into the Iowa Volunteers Hall of Fame, and represented Iowa at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. with some of his hand made wooden boats.  

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Jacquelyn (David) Ward of Monroe, Conn., Sandyann (Brent) Rolland of Clear Lake, and Nancy Jo (Tom) Lundeen of Clear Lake; grandchildren, Christopher (Abigail) Ward of Richmond, Va., Benjamin Ward, Morristown, N.J., Casey (Rodrigo) DeSouza of Brookfield, Conn., Ryan Baack of North Liberty, Iowa, Reid (Jessica) Baack of Minneapolis, Minn., Drake and Aspen Lundeen both of Clear Lake; one great-grandson, Raif Baack of Clear Lake; two sisters, Dorothy Stone of Adams, Wis., and Barbara Roberts of Clear Lake; as well as many nieces, nephews and many other extended family members and friends, and especially his Apple Valley Assisted Living family.   

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bille who died in 2005; his sister, Betty Dunn; and his brother, Joel Hanes.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, was in charge of arrangements.
