The 2A Girls Regional golf final was held at the Garner Golf Club on Monday, May 21. The GHV team placed third in the first round of Regionals held on Monday, May 14, at the Emmetsburg Country Club, but because the team was the host of the Regional finals, they also qualified to compete.
New Hampton won the Regional Final with a team score of 339. Okoboji was second with a team total of 357. GHV was sixth with a score of 419.
The good news of the day was, although the team will not be competing at the State Meet May 29-30, at Lake Panorama National Golf Course, in Panora, two of the team’s top players will be advancing. Senior Bailee Frayne finished as meet runner-up with a score of 76, while her sister, Carlee Frayne, a sophomore, finished in fifth place with a 79.
“It was very satisfying to see both Bailee and Carlee advance to the State Tournament,” said Coach Todd Greiman. “They have both been among the leaders in Class 2A all year, so finishing the season at the State Meet is well-deserved.”
Rounding out the Cardinal score was senior Taylor Bell with a 114 and freshman Kelsey Watson carded a 150.
“Taylor finished her season playing her best golf. Kelsey struggled today, but now has a taste of what varsity golf is like and is sure to return stronger as a sophomore,” said Greiman.
The State Meet will begin with a 9 a.m. shotgun start on both days.
