GHV boys get season underway with two meets last week

The season finally got underway on Tuesday, April 10, for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys track team.  The team competed in the 2018 Gerry Lenguadoro Cadet Relays in Iowa Falls.

Reece Smith led the way for the Cardinals with a first place finish in the 1600 meter run.  Smith finished with a time of 4:34.05, :18 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.

The boys distance medley team also captured a first place finish with a time of 3:50.24.  Members of the relay were Devion Moore, Jace Pringnitz, Nick Joynt and Ray Cataldo.

“It was refreshing to get the opportunity to compete outdoors,” said coach Kelsey Edwards.  “The boys have been willing to fill different roles and that has been encouraging.”

Also earning points for the team were:

•200: Jace Pringnitz, 6th, 25.66

•4x800 Relay: Blake Lynch, Nathan Larson, Kris Hammitt, Jake Hejlik, 6th, 9:58.03

•Sprint Medley: Devion Moore, Pringnitz, Nick Joynt, Ray Cataldo, 5th, 1:44.93

•Shot Put: John Hulbert, 4th, 40’08.50”; Tyler Nielsen, seventh, 39’

Junior Varsity Results:

•Sprint Medley: Jason Lillebo, Kalen Etter, Jerome Hatch, Ethan Hansen, 1st, 1:53.19

•Long Jump: Isaac Bell, 2nd, 15’07”

•100: Carter Winters, 8th, 13.89

•800: Simon Clarac, 3rd, 2:29.88; Jake Hejlik, 6th, 2:33.55; Kris Hammitt, 8th, 2:38.35

GHV Timing Meet

On Thursday, April 12, GHV hosted a timing meet.  No team scores were kept.  This meet was just to get times posted and run on a track.  No field events were held.

“We are hopeful of warm weather so that we can practice outdoors and fine tune some techniques,” said Coach Kelsey Edwards.

The Cardinals picked up a one-two finish in the 1600 meter run with Reece Smith and Ray Cataldo.  Smith ran the race in 4:30.14 and Cataldo in 4:41.05

Blake Lynch picked up a first place finish in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:15.88.

The distance medley team was the highest placing relay.  The group of Jason Lillebo, Jerome Hatch, Luke Brown and Kris Hammitt finished in third place with a time of 4:32.75.

Other events finishing in the top 10 included:

•100: Devion Moore, 5th, 12.45

•200: Moore, 4th, 25.44; Isaac Bell, 10th, 28.35

•400: Nathan Larson, 5th, 59.39

•800: Simon Clarac, 6th, 2:27.64

•3200: Clarac, 4th, 11:41.89; Andy Schreur, fifth, 11:41.90

•400 Hurdles: Luke Brown, 6th, 1:09.89; Ethan Hansen, 7th, 1:09.94
